Montreal carrot cake throwdown!

{Melissa}: I do have a sweet tooth… but rarely for things chocolaty. Among my favs are lemon & meringue pie and mapely delights (like pudding chomeur) but my all time favorite? The one I can NEVER resist on a menu? Carrot cake! It’s a family thing… like a special gene that makes us nuts for carrot cake. Living in London was heaven in regards to this particular sweet tooth but back in Montreal I must admit we have some of the best carrot cakes I’ve tasted! Here’s my top 5 picks:

  1. The sandwich (filled with cream cheese) @Campanelli
  2. The moelleux @Pâtisserie Rhubarbe
  3. The classic @Laurier BBQ
  4. The Vegan @AuxVivres
  5. The deconstructed @Pastaga

Other fine option? The mini carrot cupcake @PetitsGateaux for a snack on the go!

On a slushy day of December I dragged my bf to St-Henri to lunch at Campanelli. After a super good italian sandwich I couldn’t resist the carrot cake -sandwich style- next to the cash. Best decision I ever made! After years of being faithful to Laurier BBQ I had found my new fav carrot cake! All I have to say is: trust me, it’s worth the detour.

At number 2 is the tiny but so intense moelleux version at Patisserie Rhubarbe. Everything in this small neighborhood bakery is amazing so it comes at no surprise that their carrot cake is simply de.li.cious. This little piece of heaven just melts in your mouth and leaves you moaning of pleasure.

In third position is the classic carrot cake from Laurier BBQ. Although it deceived me on my last few visits because it was often overbaked (dry!) and the icing wasn’t consistent, it’s still in my top 5. A lifetime of perfection in taste and texture obviously is hard to erase from my memory. Another reason? Their extra serving of icing on the side. Perfect for gourmandes like me.

To continue, there’s Aux Vivres VEGAN carrot cake. Because it disappears just as fast as it appeared, you know it’s worth every bite. For vegan occasional amateurs like me, you won’t even realize it’s not your usual carrot cake. Love it!

To finish off this throwdown, Pastaga’s deconstructed carrot cake wins for originality. The conceptualization is truly unique and we love the coolness factor on this one!  Also, it tastes delicious.
